About the Lorem Ipsum Generator

Lorem ipsum is the dummy text designers and developers use to fill a layout before the real words are ready. It looks like ordinary text, with words of different lengths and sentences of different sizes, but nobody stops to read it, so attention stays on the design.

This generator makes as much of it as you need: paragraphs for an article page, a few sentences for a card, an exact number of words for a headline or a text field, or list items for a menu or a feature list. It can start with the familiar "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and can wrap the result in HTML paragraph or list tags, ready to paste into a page.

Every click on New text creates a fresh mix, so repeated blocks in a mockup do not look identical. The text is made in your browser, with nothing to install.

How to use it

  1. Choose what to generateParagraphs, Sentences, Words or List items. Switching sets a sensible starting amount: 3 paragraphs, 5 sentences, 50 words or 5 list items.
  2. Set how manyType the number you need in the box next to the choices. The text updates as you type.
  3. Pick the options"Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is on by default. Turn on "Wrap in HTML tags" to get <p> or <ul> and <li> tags.
  4. Get a new versionClick New text for a different random mix with the same settings.
  5. Copy or downloadCopy the text to your clipboard or download it as a .txt file. The status line shows the number of words and characters.

Key features

Four kinds of output

Paragraphs, sentences, an exact number of words, or short list items.

Natural-looking text

Sentences have 7 to 15 words, sometimes with a comma, and paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences, so blocks vary in length like real writing.

Classic opening

Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", the line everyone recognizes as placeholder text, or turn it off.

HTML ready

Paragraphs come wrapped in <p> tags and list items in a <ul> list, ready for a web page or a CMS.

Large amounts

Up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 10,000 words or 200 list items in one go.

Word and character count

The status line tells you exactly how much text was generated.

Examples

Three paragraphs for an article layout

The default settings give three paragraphs that start like this:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Pellentesque consequat ornare nunc sagittis, neque proin pharetra elementum nisi rhoncus id dui. ...

The rest is random, so your text will differ. Over 300 runs, three paragraphs came to between 125 and 253 words, about 190 on average, which is close to a short blog post intro.

What each type gives you

Type and amountTypical result
3 paragraphsAbout 190 words, separated by blank lines
5 sentencesAbout 50 words in one paragraph
50 wordsExactly 50 words, no final period
5 list items3 to 8 words each, about 27 in total

An exact number of words

Choose Words and type 5. With the classic opening on, you get exactly Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. Use it to test a headline, a button label or a field that must fit a certain number of words.

A list in HTML

Choose List items, keep 5, and turn on Wrap in HTML tags:

<ul>
  <li>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet</li>
<li>Accumsan varius lacus magna aute velit elit egestas</li>
<li>Feugiat mattis purus nulla mi pretium</li>
  <li>Faucibus arcu accumsan vel egestas</li>
  <li>Enim elementum pretium sunt</li>
</ul>

Without HTML tags, each item starts with "- " on its own line, which also works as a Markdown list.

Tips

  • Use about the same amount of placeholder text as the real content will have. A layout tested with one short paragraph often breaks when the real 600-word article arrives.
  • Turn off the classic opening when you need several blocks on one page. Otherwise every card or column starts with the same "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and the mockup looks repetitive.
  • Test long words and short ones. Click New text a few times to see how your design handles different line lengths and paragraph sizes.
  • For text fields with a character limit, generate words, then check the length with the Character Counter.
  • Replace placeholder text before you publish. Search engines and readers see lorem ipsum as unfinished work, and it is easy to miss in a footer or a meta description.

Common mistakes and limits

  • Leaving lorem ipsum on a live pageIt happens more often than you think, especially in alt texts, meta descriptions and rarely visited pages. Search your site for "lorem" before launch.
  • Designing only for neat textReal content has long names, short headings and odd lengths. Lorem ipsum is evenly random, so also test with real samples where you can.
  • Expecting real LatinThe words come from a scrambled Latin passage and are put together at random. The sentences do not mean anything and should not be translated.
  • Using it for right-to-left or other scriptsLorem ipsum only shows how Latin letters look. If your site will be in Arabic, Japanese or another script, test with sample text in that language.
  • Expecting the same text twiceEach click, and each change to the settings, makes a new random text. Copy the version you like before you change anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is lorem ipsum?
It is placeholder text used in design and publishing to show how a layout looks with text before the real content exists. It looks like Latin but is deliberately meaningless, so it does not distract from the design.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
It is a scrambled version of a passage from "De finibus bonorum et malorum", a work by the Roman writer Cicero from 45 BC. It became widely used through Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and later through desktop publishing software.
What does "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" mean?
Nothing exactly. It comes from a Cicero sentence about pain ("dolorem ipsum", pain itself), but the words were cut and rearranged, so the placeholder text has no meaning.
Is the generated text random?
Yes. Apart from the classic opening, sentences are built from a list of 118 Latin words in random order, with random sentence and paragraph lengths.
How much text can I generate?
Up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences, 10,000 words or 200 list items at once. Higher numbers are lowered to the maximum automatically.
Can I get HTML?
Yes. Turn on Wrap in HTML tags: paragraphs and sentences come in <p> tags, and list items in a <ul> list with one <li> per item.
Can I use the text commercially?
Yes. Lorem ipsum is not protected by copyright, and the generated text is yours to use in any project.
Why not use real text instead?
Real text is better once you have it. Placeholder text is useful earlier, when the content is not written yet, or when you want people to judge a design without reading the words.
