About the Weight Converter
The Weight Converter turns any weight into another unit: pounds to kilograms, ounces to grams, stones to pounds, and many more. Type a number, choose the two units, and the result appears instantly, together with the same weight in all 17 units the tool supports.
It helps with recipes that use grams, luggage and shipping limits in kilograms, body weight in stones from British sources, gold and silver prices in troy ounces, gemstones in carats, and medicine or ammunition specs in grains. The differences between US short tons, UK long tons and metric tons are included too.
The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and every other unit here is defined exactly from it or from the kilogram, so the conversions are as precise as the number of digits you choose. Everything runs in your browser.

Everyday weights
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 kilogram | 2.204622622 pounds |
| 1 pound | 0.45359237 kilograms |
| 1 pound | 16 ounces |
| 1 ounce | 28.34952313 grams |
| 8 ounces | 226.796185 grams |
| 150 pounds | 68.0388555 kilograms |
| 70 kilograms | 154.3235835 pounds |
For quick math, a kilogram is a little over 2.2 pounds, and an ounce is about 28 grams. A 50-pound checked-bag limit is 22.68 kg, which airlines usually round to 23 kg.
Stones and tons
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 stone | 14 pounds |
| 11 stones | 69.85322498 kilograms |
| 1 short ton (US) | 2,000 pounds |
| 1 long ton (UK) | 2,240 pounds |
| 1 metric ton | 2,204.622622 pounds |
In the UK, people often give body weight in stones and pounds: 11 st 4 lb is 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 pounds. Enter that as pounds to convert it in one step. A "ton" in a US document almost always means the 2,000-pound short ton.
Gold, gems and grains
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1034768 grams |
| 1 troy pound | 12 troy ounces |
| 1 troy pound | 0.8228571429 pounds |
| 1 pennyweight | 1.55517384 grams |
| 1 carat | 200 milligrams |
| 1 grain | 64.79891 milligrams |
| 7,000 grains | 1 pound |
A troy ounce is about 10% heavier than a regular ounce, but a troy pound is lighter than a regular pound, because it has only 12 ounces instead of 16. The grain is the one unit both systems share. 500 milligrams is 7.716179176 grains.
Tips
- Bake by weight when you can. Grams are far more consistent than cups, and the converter gets you from ounces to grams exactly.
- Convert stones and pounds to pounds first (stones × 14 + pounds), then to kilograms.
- Use 4 significant digits for kitchen and travel use. A scale that reads to the gram does not need eight decimals.
- When you see a gold or silver price per ounce, it is per troy ounce. Divide by 31.1034768 to get the price per gram.
- For mass in science, keep 10 or 15 digits and copy with the button, which gives a plain number without separators.
Common mistakes and limits
- Converting cups to grams hereCups measure volume. How many grams a cup holds depends on the ingredient: a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of sugar. Use a recipe chart or a scale.
- Mixing up troy and regular ouncesPrecious metals use troy ounces of 31.1 g. Using a 28.35 g ounce undervalues gold by about 10%.
- Assuming every ton is the sameA US short ton is 2,000 lb, a UK long ton 2,240 lb, and a metric ton (tonne) about 2,205 lb. Check which one your source means.
- Confusing carats and karatsA carat is a gemstone weight of 200 mg. A karat measures the purity of gold, where 24 karat is pure.
- Reading 11.4 stones as 11 stones 4 pounds11.4 stones is 159.6 pounds, while 11 st 4 lb is 158 pounds. Stones and pounds are not a decimal pair.
